Remember The Titans Directed by Boaz Yoakin is what you would call a typical sports movie. At the start there is an average football team who work throughout the season and make it to the final. The team finds itself only points behind the opposition, but they score in the final play of the game resulting in a win for the titans. Although there are a few memorable moments throughout the movie, the film sits itself in the average, slightly above average category. The film however isn’t just a sports movie, it has a big theme around the racism that came after the integration of black and white schools. In the movie the town learns to accept each other through sport.
Remember the titans is a film based in 1971 Virginia at the TC williams high school. It tells the story of their unbeaten season during their first year of integration. Coach Boon who has just moved in town has been given the job, taking it from Bill Yoast, Boon offers him a job as assistant coach and Bill reluctantly accepts. During the pre-season the coaches have to try and mold a hugely diverse team into winning material. As the team plays games, and wins games, the town unites and overcomes the hatred for each other.
The music and sound for Remember The Titans is in my opinion very well suited to the film. The music was picked very well as it suited the overall attitude for the film, also the majority of the music was from the time it was set (1970’s) or sounded like it fit the era. Even when the Blacks and Whites were arguing and fighting the music still gave off a funny, feel good feeling making even the slow parts exciting and easy to watch. The use of music was also used very well to show unity in the team as they developed and integrated.
The plot of Remember The Titans was well done, but it would not be hard to find other movies with similar themes and storylines. It did have a few things going for it though, in terms of the theme on racism and the fact it was based on a true story was kind of cool too. I think they could have chosen a better way to end the final game, rather than the traditional scoring in the final minute to win the game. I think they could have made more tension, because you could tell that the Titans were going to win, otherwise it would be a very anticlimactic end.
Lastly I think the place it was set, and the era was very believable and well done. Everything from the fashion, the attitude of the population, and the beliefs of the population was very well represented for 1970s Virginia. If I walked onto the film set during that Era I probably wouldn’t notice the difference.
Overall Remember The Titans is a well executed film with an overused sports movie plotline. The music and setting were well done but there were a few things letting it down such as the plot. I would recommend it as a standard sports movie but nothing more.
